From Relaxed to Natural: Transitioning Tips

Alright so you are not quite natural but hey the seed is planted and you are well on your way. So now what? Here are a few things I would suggest for those transitioning.

  • Realize that you do not have to do the big chop. Rather, you can cut it off slowly until there is no relaxed hair left.
  • The less heat the better. There are so many heatless styles out there. It is said that applying heat affects the integrity of your curl pattern so do so at your own discretion but be cautious.
  • Develop a plan so that you know how you will accomplish your hair goals.
  • Develop a routine and stick with it. The routine should consist of how often you will shampoo your hair, deep condition your hair, co wash your hair, and even do hot oil treatments on your hair.
  • Know the products you are putting on your hair. Watch the reviews on YouTube first. This has been invaluable for me.
  • Sulfate and alcohol are not the best ingredients for your hair. However, you might find products that you like that contain them and that is ok.
  • Know how you will detangle your hair....or if you will even brush your hair. Some naturals rarely if ever brush their hair.
  • Get a ruler so that you can measure your growth. It will help you realize your hair is growing.
  • Understand your hair likes water. As a relaxed gal, I just hated the idea of my hair getting wet other than washing it. But know your hair likes water. Water is now your new best friend.

More tips to come as I go through my transition journey!
